Unveiling East Switzerland's Cultural Heartbeat

Have you ever stood in front of a piece of art and felt... off the clock? Like time just folded in on itself? A space where history hums alongside whatever’s happening right now. That’s what the Heinrich Gebert Cultural Foundation is all about. At its heart—Kunstmuseum/Kunsthalle Appenzell. But these aren’t just buildings with paintings. Oh no. They’re more like portals. Portals, where tradition shakes hands with local stories, flirt with global ones.

Kunstmuseum / Kunsthalle Appenzell are not just museums. There are conversations. A back-and-forth between time, space, and culture. Some exhibitions challenge you. Others are a quiet little corner to just sit. Breathe. Maybe let your mind wander. It’s about the connection—the stories.
Designing their look was like signing the corner of a masterpiece. A clear corporate design isn’t just about looking slick. It’s about being unmistakable. Not loud. Simple, but not boring.
It wasn’t about the logo. A full-on makeover. The corporate design? Cleaned up, but still with a little personality. The merger? Oh, that was a dance. Two identities figuring out how to hold hands and move as one. Even the exhibitions were reimagined, telling stories that felt true to the brand and seamlessly connected. And the signage? Not just directions, but a warm welcome, making every interaction feel intentional. The whole thing—every moment—came together into this one big, beautiful, cohesive… something. Either way, it stuck.
After 2022, everything shifted. A new curator. A fresh perspective. They called in another creative team, and the identity of the museum got a bold refresh. You know that feeling when you rearrange a room you’ve lived in forever? It’s still your space but somehow… new. That’s what this was. They didn’t toss out the old; they gave it a new voice. The colors? Braver. The typography? Sharp. It felt like the museum starting a new chapter—still in its signature style, but with a touch of daring.
Here’s a glimpse of what I’ve designed over the years. Explore the exhibitions and see where they take you!
Here’s a twist. These stunning buildings? They’re not just for strolling art lovers. You can actually rent them. Imagine hosting a wedding here. Or a corporate event that doesn’t feel, well, corporate. A concert, even. (Yes, there’s a concert hall!) These spaces practically ooze creativity and sophistication. Like your big day just borrowed a little magic. Or maybe a lot.

3 brochures about the brick hut (Kunsthalle), the art collection and the architecture of both buildings
The true magic happens when you step inside. Step through the door of the brick hut, and you’re in an architectural dream. Wooden beams everywhere. A glass cube, somehow floating within it all. How does something feel both ancient and modern at the same time? That’s Kunsthalle Appenzell for you. Housed in a 500-year-old Ziegelhütte, it’s a space that feels like a bridge between worlds. History and innovation holding hands. You can’t really explain it—you have to see it. Words and photos? They don’t even come close.
And the Kunstmuseum and Kunsthalle experience? It’s not just about the exhibitions or the jaw-dropping architecture. It’s in the details. The little things. Like the way the signage seems to say, “Hey, you’re in the right place.” Or the staff, who somehow make you feel like an old friend. It’s like stepping into a world where everything quietly whispers, "This is for you. Get ready to explore."
But here’s the kicker: these museums don’t stay still. Ever. They’re like that friend who’s always reinventing themselves, surprising you every time you meet. The exhibitions are constantly changing, a kaleidoscope of artists and ideas. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, it shifts again. Keeps you on your toes. Makes you want to come back. Because who doesn’t love a good surprise?
